How much do wedding flowers cost, and why?Dec 18

You’ve been to plenty of weddings so you know the basics, right?  You’ve chatted with married friends about their experiences and now you’re busy planning your own special day. And whilst the process can be lots of fun, it can also feel a bit daunting at times, especially with all the dollars involved. Plus, there are so many decisions to make… from choosing the venue, your gown, your shoes, the guest list, the stationery, the décor, the music, the photography and of course, the flowers!

Beautiful floral styling truly helps create an amazing wedding vibe. It takes the blank canvas of a naked venue and fills it with personality and charisma, creating a wonderful setting to celebrate one of the most important days in your life.

As with the visual impact achieved, the cost of wedding floral styling can vary greatly, so sometimes a little ‘floral insider’ knowledge is needed to help balance the dream with the investment you’re willing to make. We suggest you take your time to find the right “fit” with your chosen wedding florist because it is not always the amount you pay that gives you the best outcome.

What we ask our brides…

One of the first things we ask a bride is what she imagines her dream wedding to be like.

By the time we meet with most brides, they have already scrolled through hundreds of Pinterest images and can have a confusion of ideas. If you’re fond of scrolling for inspiration, we suggest you go easy on how many actual images you pin to your inspiration boards; choose only the images that really capture your attention as these can be inspirational in designing your floral decor. And even though you know some Pinterest images might be way above budget, save them anyway! It’s amazing what details and features can be garnered and incorporated in styling.

Next, we talk about the colours that bring a smile to her face, the flowers which remind her of a special time or place, or a floral scent which awakens happy memories.

And then, with some inspirational images and her personal favourites, we select a variety of blooms and sketch designs to really convey her style. We may include a feature or two from Pinterest images or the work of other designers, some interesting quirky bits, and a few unexpected surprises.

The fusion of ideas will result in a beautiful, alluring floral décor with a dash of intrigue that is a true reflection of a bride’s dreams.

A bit of professional florist chat here… in working with design, we decide on the flowers and foliage to use in an arrangement and how to give maximum visual appeal. Then we rely on the principles of design to give us the freedom and flexibility to express a more artistic character and to develop the emotion of the design.

For example, if we are working with a classic white and green décor we will fuse subtle differences in ‘white’ and contrasting textures with consideration of visual balance, proportion, dominance, rhythm, and harmony to create a captivating design. This results in that WOW factor and it really can be attributed to your floral designer, their knowledge, experience, creativity, and passion for design.

There is a lot more to good floristry than just the flowers themselves, although they will always be the stars of any design.

I am sure you can relate to value… we all have those shoes we purchased that were a bit of a compromise because at the time we couldn’t justify spending a little extra on the ones we really wanted. And every time we wear them we experience a touch of disappointment, and slightly sore feet!

It’s much the same when it comes to your wedding flowers. You need to decide what you value, and are willing to invest dollars into.

Good floral design can be expensive. However, a good floral designer will ensure you create the look and feel you dream of, without ravaging the budget.

When working with brides we always keep both their dreams and budget in mind, working to find the right balance between the two. We may suggest less expensive flowers mixed with chosen blooms; small designs with an artistic feature rather than lots of flowers; ceiling installations with a lush foliage base and an accent of large blooms; ceremony arrangements that can be repurposed for reception décor. There are lots of options.

For us knowing the venue and what works well in the space is also a key consideration.

Usually, we can meet our client’s needs and provide a beautiful floral outcome; yet there are times when we simply can’t make it work and, although painful, it may be time for the couple to rethink their priorities.

The average dollar value apportioned to weddings flowers in Australia is about 8% of the overall wedding budget (ASIC Money Smart Guide). And while we don’t know exact budgets, many of our brides appear to have spent more than 8% on floral decor and others have spent less.

No matter what amount a bride invests in floral styling, our team loves creating WOW wedding floral décor. We enjoy meeting every bride and exploring how we can make her dreams a reality. There is no better feeling than having a bride come back to us with heartfelt thanks for making her dream come true.

And, if you would like to have a chat about floral styling for your wedding, please get in touch. We would love to meet you.
